Summary of the Pillars of True Islâm

  1. To believe in the Ilâh (God) who possesses the most beautiful names, attributes, affairs, deeds, actions, and laws as articulated in the Qur'ân.
  2. To worship Allâh, the Ilâh with the most beautiful names mentioned in the Qur'ân—striving to fulfill the rights of the divine names and attributes, and to live according to the demands they entail.
  3. Ḏikr of Allâh: to do all that is necessary to acquire and sustain the awareness of the divine omnipresence.
  4. To establish and nurture a close and intimate relationship with Allâh, working continually to strengthen and consolidate this bond.
  5. To believe in the Qur'ân as the final revelation and the perfect word of Allâh, and to live accordingly.
  6. To believe that the Prophet Muḥammad is the Messenger of God and the Seal of the Prophets, and to act in accordance with this belief.
  7. To believe in the Ġayb (the unseen) mentioned in the Qur'ân and to live accordingly. The Ġayb includes all that lies beyond the scope of human senses and perceptions.
  8. Tazakkî: the cleansing, purification, enhancement, improvement, refinement, and beautification of the human entity (self-cleansing, self-purification, self-enhancement, self-improvement, self-refinement, and self-beautification).
  9. To deal with all created beings in accordance with the elements of true Islâm; that is, according to its laws, values, morals, teachings, instructions, rulings, injunctions, commandments, and orders.
  10. To avoid major sins, misdeeds, shameful actions, obscenities, and all that is strongly prohibited by Islamic law; in other words, to abstain from immoralities (lewd actions, unlawful sexual intercourse, and all evil deeds) forbidden in Islâm.
  11. To establish the Ṣalât (ritual prayer).
  12. To give Az-Zakât (obligatory almsgiving).
  13. To spend generously in the way of Allâh.
  14. To perform righteous deeds.
  15. To call to Allâh, which implies enjoining the Maʿrûf (what is good) and forbidding the Munkar (what is evil).
  16. To employ the mental faculties in reflecting on cosmological and psychological phenomena, as well as on the history of past nations, in order to understand, perceive, and comprehend the divine cosmological laws.
  17. Jihâd in the way of Allâh.
  18. Aṣ-Ṣiyâm: Fasting.
  19. Al-Ḥajj: Performing the pilgrimage to Allâh’s Sacred House in Makkah.
